I have to be honest here, I absolutely hate the Blackhawks but they're one of the teams I was going to lose sleep over if I wasn't able to shoot this game. Being able to see players like Marian Hossa, Duncan Keith (unfortunately out with an injury), and Jonathan Toews who I will argue tooth and nail with someone if they think he isn't top 5 for captains in the NHL was such a treat in itself. Despite my hatred for the team, my favorite player on their team and one of my favorites in hockey is Jonathan Toews. I compare him a lot to Steve Yzerman with the effect they've had on their respective organizations, Yzerman helping lift the Red Wings out of the "Dead Wings" era and winning 3 Stanley Cups. Toews has helped lead the Blackhawks to 3 Stanley Cups in the salary cap era of the NHL, all in 6 years. It's been a tale of dominance for Toews and Chicago and although they've lost players in this recent off season to free agency and trades, they're still a team you have to watch out for when it comes playoff time. So when it came time to request games, Chicago was one of the first games I requested to cover. I couldn't miss out on the opportunity because there isn't a guarantee that I'll be approved to cover the Stadium Series game in February, which would be the pinnacle of my year if I were to cover that.
Not much was different with my schedule with this game, still showed up early to receive my credential and set up my computer for transmitting images between periods. I think one of these days I'll do a blog post about my workflow and how I do things so that kind of gives you an idea of how I do things in a small time frame. As far as actual photographers go, this event was pretty sparse, I believe there were only 6 of us there. One from the Star Tribune, AP, Getty, USA Today, Wild, then me. Small nitpick I have is that the Wild were pumping in a ton of fog for the start of the game, which is something I thought they were going to do only for the home opener. Gave all of my photos this weird haze before I edited them.
That's all from me, I'm currently scheduled to shoot the Wild game this Thursday when the Nashville Predators are in town so be on the lookout for that. Hopefully the next time I'm covering the Wild when the Blackhawks are in town is for the Stadium Series!
Until next time.
