Hello again, the Big Ten (B1G) hockey tournament took place here at Xcel Energy Center so I was able to cover the three days of competition. Sad state for college hockey, especially for Minnesota fans who wanted nothing to do with the conference realignment because the WCHA was the best conference but after the B1G came into formation, it split up the teams and along with it, bitter rivalries. No more Minnesota vs. North Dakota is the big one, best rivalry in hockey and I mean both NHL and NCAA. Bruins vs. Canadiens, Blackhawks vs. Red Wings, and BC vs. Boston U don't come close to the hatred between these two teams. Regardless, this is what we're stuck with, a 6 team conference with 3 traditional powerhouse teams and 3 others that no one really cares about. When this conference was formed I said it'd just be Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin battling it out for the championship and I was right. Wisconsin won it the first year, then Minnesota, and now Michigan. Notre Dame will be added in 2017-2018 bringing in some new blood and a good competitor but I think you'd be hard pressed to find any Gopher fan that's actually happy about this and it shows with the attendance over the weekend. Empty seats littered Xcel compared to the WCHA Final Five which would be standing room only full of fans from all over the place. It was incredible.
Not my video, but you get the idea.
Rachel Blount of the Star Tribune did an amazing article about the B1G and how the fans here feel about it, I encourage you to read it. http://www.startribune.com/big-ten-hockey-is-a-buzzkill-for-fans-in-minnesota/370397541/
So that's that. I shot the Calgary Flames/Minnesota Wild game last night and this weekend I'm covering the NCAA hockey west regional for the tournament.
